On Friday 17th May, we delivered three back-to-back Money Wise workshops at YGG Bronllwyn Primary School in South Wales. Over 100 enthusiastic pupils from Years 3, 5, and 6 joined us for conversations about money, choices, and how the world around them works.

What made the day especially exciting was the support—and physical presence—of our newest partner: Langstone Construction Group. This collaboration brings together a new region, a new school, a new business, and we hope… the start of something much bigger.

Year 3 students were full of energy and wide-eyed curiosity. They hadn’t encountered many financial terms before—but they were eager to learn. One even knew about cheques, hinting at a household that still uses them!

We also had a moment of comic gold when a cheeky student asked if Paul’s wife was called Fiona. When asked why, he replied:

“Because you look like Shrek.”

Cue laughter all around (including Paul’s).

Year 6 pupils brought a more mature perspective. Oliver, in particular, impressed us by explaining the difference between debit and credit cards, adding that a credit card is “not an endless supply.” That level of clarity and understanding at his age is rare—and it tells us this work is paying off.

The headteacher later shared this lovely feedback:

“The Year 3 class had an amazing time at the money workshop! They were fully engaged as they learned about the importance of money, the differences between credit and debit cards, and how to make smart spending choices.

The interactive quiz and fun games were a big hit, keeping everyone excited and involved throughout the session.

The highlight of the day was when Paul handed out special badges—each student was absolutely over the moon to receive one! It was a fantastic learning experience that left the whole class buzzing with enthusiasm.”

Headteacher, YGG Bronllwyn

Yet time and again, lots of young people don’t even put their hands up.

At first, it feels strange—because we know they’re buying things all the time. But when you dig a little deeper, it makes perfect sense. If they haven’t physically handed over money, they don’t think they’ve spent anything.

And that’s where it gets interesting – Are Buying Decisions Only About Handing Over Money?

Recently, I was doing some market research with teenagers — around 13 to 16 years old — as we shape the next evolution of Make Sense of Pence for secondary schools.

We asked them how many buying decisions they thought they’d made over the last few days.

Most said one or two.

The conversation got even better when we asked about spending someone else’s money (like parents topping up a lunch account or paying for things on their behalf).

If it wasn’t their own money, they didn’t even count it as a buying decision. However, every time they chose what to eat at lunch, what to wear, what to click on online — they made a decision that involved money somewhere.

Whether they felt it or not.

Exploring finance, influence, and community spirit with 100 brilliant young minds.

Our recent visit to Newport Junior School was a standout moment in the Money Wise journey. Over the course of the day, we delivered three back-to-back workshops to nearly 100 Year 5 pupils—making this one of the largest single-year group schools we’ve worked with so far. With three intakes of Year 5 students, the sheer range of personalities, perspectives, and financial perceptions on display offered us a rich and fascinating learning experience of our own.

Before the workshops even began, one detail immediately stood out—something that had nothing to do with money, but everything to do with the spirit of the school. Upon arriving, I was welcomed into the staff room and spotted a wonderful wall display focused on staff well-being. There were sticky notes of encouragement, recommendations for shows and books, a space for worry-box messages, and a shout-out section to appreciate fellow team members. It was a clear reflection of the positive, supportive culture fostered at Newport Junior. That sense of community energy set the tone perfectly for the day.

Others had a much wider (and sometimes surprising) understanding of financial routes. When we spoke of spending a few struggled to recall the word “transaction,” even though they clearly understood the concept when explained. This shows the gap between language recognition and contextual understanding—something we see time and time again.

When we asked how transactions happen, the group jumped straight to digital methods like phone payments and apple pay. Cash got a mention but certainly wasn’t top of mind. In one workshop, the students couldn’t think beyond their tech-first experiences—a clear sign of the times.

As always, one of the most engaging discussions came from our “needs vs. wants” debate. Children are so excited to talk about what they want—from Air Up water bottles to gaming consoles—and their enthusiasm often outweighs any rational financial decision-making.

The brand power of items like water bottles was particularly strong here. When presented with a choice between a branded item or the same money in cash, many still chose the branded product. Brand recognition continues to influence even the youngest consumers.

We also ran our usual value perception game—comparing the cost of everyday and luxury items—and something unusual happened: one of the groups moved almost entirely as a pack. No one was prepared to step away from the consensus, even when it led to incorrect decisions. It was a perfect example of peer influence in action and a good reminder that decision-making isn’t always individual.

The children had a general awareness that a house was expensive but couldn’t articulate exactly what that meant. One group suggested £3500 for a house—while others hovered around the £200,000–£1 million range… not surprising, how would a child know the price of a house Interestingly, nobody estimated a weekly shop to be more than £100, which suggests a limited understanding of household costs.

But this is why we run these sessions—to provide space for these questions, discussions, and “a-ha” moments.

At Make Sense of Pence, much of our work focuses on teaching children and young people about money. But recently, I was reminded that how we teach — and how young people are conditioned to respond — is just as important as what we’re teaching.

As part of some market research for the next phase of our Money Wise Workshops, I sat down with a young man to explore his understanding of money. Before we even began, he nervously warned me that he probably wouldn’t be able to give “good answers.”

The thing is — there were no “good” or “bad” answers. There weren’t even “right” or “wrong” ones.
I explained that I wasn’t testing him. I wasn’t assessing him. I was simply trying to uncover what he already knew — and where there might be gaps. Because understanding those gaps helps shape better education, not pass judgment.

Once reassured, we had a brilliant conversation. He shared insights, raised questions, and revealed real areas of strength — alongside the natural uncertainties you’d expect at his age. It was exactly the kind of discussion I’d hoped for.

But then something happened that truly stuck with me.
When I finished speaking with him, his parents asked, “How did he do?”

It struck me as such an odd question.
He did exactly what he needed to: he engaged, he thought, he answered honestly. Yet the underlying assumption was that there had been a pass/fail moment — that somehow this was a test, and success would be defined by how many correct answers he had given.

It made me think more deeply about the culture of education and testing that so many young people grow up in. From an early age, school systems often place emphasis on grades, marks, correctness. And while that’s important for many academic subjects, when it comes to broader life skills — especially around money — that rigid framework doesn’t always serve us.

There are trade-offs, preferences, and evolving life stages that all impact financial decisions.

When we only frame money education as a series of right or wrong answers, we risk missing the bigger, more important lessons: self-awareness, critical thinking, decision-making.

That might sound odd, especially since money is often framed as a black-and-white, numerical subject. But more and more, we’re realising that the decisions we make about money aren’t just logical—they’re deeply social.

Recently, during a session with older teenagers as part of our research for the Make Sense of Pence Rangers programme, I posed a familiar question:
“How do we get money?”
The answers started off creatively—donations, GoFundMe pages—avenues we don’t usually hear from younger children.
Some places just feel like home. That was the feeling when we arrived at Churcham Primary School to deliver our latest Money Wise Workshop. But this wasn’t just another workshop—it was a special moment of full-circle storytelling.

Why? Because Mark Davies, the new headteacher at Churcham, was one of the very first supporters of the Make Sense of Pence project. Back when he was deputy head at Twyning Primary, Mark helped bring our first-ever workshop to life. Now, years later, it was incredible to see him in his new role, continuing to champion financial education.

We delivered two engaging workshops—one for Years 3 & 4 and another for Years 5 & 6. As always, we explored where money comes from, how we spend it, and the difference between needs and wants. But what makes these sessions truly special is the unexpected moments.

New Perspectives: For the first time ever, students suggested that you could get money through insurance claims and compensation for injuries—an insightful take on financial systems that we hadn’t heard before.

The Great Tax Debate: Should we pay taxes? Are sweets essential? Year after year, the debate rages on. The younger students saw taxes as a burden, while some fiercely argued that sweets should be classified as a necessity!

Brand Awareness Starts Young: One student identified a fake Air Up bottle at a glance—highlighting just how aware children are of branding and value perception, even at a young age.

Cost Shockers: When asked how much a house costs, one student confidently guessed £1,000, another said £900—before being stunned by the reality of an average UK house price nearing £300,000.

Every session reminds us why we do this. Watching students have ‘aha!’ moments as they start to question, explore, and engage with money in real-world contexts is what Make Sense of Pence is all about.

Rethinking how we teach children about money, I was at a dinner party recently when a gentleman named David leaned across the table and said, “Surely, if you just explain to a child that this water bottle is £20 and that one is £2, they’d make the logical choice to buy the cheaper one and save the rest?”

It sounds perfectly reasonable, doesn’t it?

But unfortunately, that’s not how children think.

And more importantly, that’s not how they feel.

You see, adults often make the mistake of looking at children’s financial decision-making through the lens of adult logic—assuming they’ll recognise ‘value’ in the same way we do. That they’ll instinctively compare cost, consider savings, and factor in alternative spending options. But the reality we’re discovering through our Money Wise Workshops is quite different.

When we hold up two water bottles—one branded, one not—it’s not just a comparison of price for children. It’s about identity, status, belonging.

The branded one isn’t just a bottle. It’s a symbol. It might be what their friends have. It might be what they saw on TikTok. It might just be cooler. And the concept of having “£18 left over” doesn’t carry weight unless they understand what else that £18 could mean in their world.

We assume they’ll know that. But they don’t—because nobody’s told them.

None of those choices are inherently “wrong”… but they are telling. They’re telling children: This is how you spend money. If we want them to make better financial decisions, we must show them how. We must give them tools, language, and real-life examples that help them understand the consequences of their choices.

Because if we don’t, we’re not just leaving it to chance—we’re leaving them in a cycle of confusion and comparison.

And surely… we can do better than that.

Some milestones are worth celebrating. This week, Make Sense of Pence hit a major one—we’ve now delivered Money Wise Workshops to over 1,000 students! And what better place to mark the occasion than Twyning Primary School in Gloucestershire, the very school where this journey began?

Twyning was home to our first-ever Money Wise Workshop back in early 2024. A lot has changed since then—the workshop has evolved, our discussions have deepened, and the number of young minds we’ve reached has grown significantly. But stepping back into Twyning felt like coming full circle, a reminder of how far we’ve come and an exciting look at what’s next.

From that first session at Twyning, our workshop format has been refined, expanded, and shaped by feedback from students, teachers, and real-world conversations.

One of the biggest changes has been introducing decision-making into the ‘Needs vs. Wants’ discussion. It’s no longer just about identifying essential vs. luxury items—we now encourage students to think critically about the choices they make around money.

Do you need a water bottle? Yes. Of course. But is a takeaway meal an essential expense, or is it a choice?

These discussions are shaping how children think about money—not just in the present, but in how they approach their future financial decisions.

From a single school in Gloucestershire to delivering workshops across the region, hitting the 1,000-student milestone is something we’re incredibly proud of.

It’s proof that these conversations are needed.
